Brompton take the path less travelled with new Explore adventure bike

People have been exploring on Bromptons for years - they’re not described as the Swiss Army Knife of bikes without good reason.

This is a bike that has circumnavigated the globe underneath Heinz Stucke, been ridden by research scientists at the South Pole and been back and forth from Land’s End to John O’Groats more times than you can say “haggis pasty” (if there ever was such a thing).

We even know of a couple who took their Bromptons on a tour of the west coast of America, from San Francisco to Los Angeles, along 400 miles-plus of coastline.

Most Bromptons, however, never catch a whiff of country air. Most of them stay on the city streets, doing their daily donkey work on the commute.

So to hammer home the incredible potential of these little bikes to take you as far as your imagination will allow, the British brand has gone all rugged on us. The new Explore Edition features all-terrain Schwalbe tan wall tyres, a 28L roll-top handlebar bag, an enhanced spares pouch under the very cool Brooks C17 Cambium saddle and a lower ratio six-speed gearing to tackle the hills that loom above you whenever you escape the urban sprawl.

Most noticeable is the colour. This is a bike that looks as if it could be parachuted out of a Hercules and airdropped into a FoB. Olive and orange, with a complimentary coloured saddle, this little Brompton screams “let’s get lost together.” It’s a good job it was tested by explorer Alastair Humphreys on a ride across the Highlands.

If you’re wondering what you could actually do on an Explore Edition Brompton, they’ve got that covered, too. Everyone who purchases an Explore bike will also receive a copy of Brompton’s new Explore book. Created with micro-adventurer Alastair Humphreys, it includes Brompton’s City Escape Guides with routes out of major cities to fuel inspiration for your next trip.
